The Atmosphere at Porthos
Walking into Porthos Steakhouse & Pub, I immediately noticed the American and British rock-and-roll vibe. The walls are decorated with iconic figures like Lenny Kravitz, Tina Turner, and David Bowie, giving the place a nostalgic, international feel. It feels less like a Colombian steakhouse and more like a slice of the U.S. or U.K. tucked away inside a modern mall.
The place wasn’t too crowded when I visited, which meant no long waits. The vibe was laid-back, a nice balance between casual dining and a touch of sophistication.
What I Ordered
Although Porthos specializes in steak, I wasn’t in the mood for a big cut of beef. Instead, I decided to try their Chipotle Burger. It came with a side of papas cascos, a style of fries that resemble thick, rustic potato wedges with the skin still on. To wash it down, I grabbed a Coca-Cola Sin Azúcar (sugar-free Coke).
The burger arrived hot and juicy, layered with smoky chipotle flavors that gave it a nice kick without overpowering the taste. The fries were crunchy, well-seasoned, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. It felt like a step up from fast food: quality ingredients, cooked fresh, and served hot.
The Cost of Dining
One of the things I love about eating out in Colombia is the price point compared to the U.S. My entire meal (the Chipotle Burger with fries plus a drink) came to about $12 USD. The burger and fries alone were around $10, and the soda was $2.
This is not fast food, but it’s still incredibly affordable by international standards. Porthos also adds a suggested 10% tip to the bill, which is common practice in Colombia.
Dessert Options
After finishing the burger, I thought about ordering dessert. I had my eye on the mocha cake, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available that day. The only option was a cocoa flan, a creamy, milk-based dessert topped with caramel. While tempting, I decided to skip it this time. Still, if you have a sweet tooth, the flan might be a good way to round out your meal.
Beyond the Restaurant: Local Tips
One of the staff members suggested I check out El Malecón, a scenic boardwalk in Barranquilla that features a statue of Shakira, the city’s most celebrated world-renowned entertainer. There’s also a newly built statue of Sofía Vergara, the famous actress from Barranquilla, Colombia – but unfortunately, I didn’t view her statue this visit – next time! For anyone visiting, this makes a perfect post-meal stroll — good food at Porthos followed by local culture just a short trip away.

Porthos Steakhouse & Pub is a solid option if you find yourself in Mall Viva Barranquilla. Whether you’re craving steak, burgers, or just want a comfortable place to eat while shopping, it delivers both in quality and price.
